In the second paragraph, I noticed that Sherman Alexies talked about “A little Indian boy teaches himself to read at an early age and advances quickly” so I wrote that he was open to trying something, meaning reading, new and had a great outcome, which will help me remember that he’s showing the habit of openness.

In the last paragraph, I noticed that Alexsies said he refused to fail, so I wrote that he didn’t want to be another statistic so he worked hard to be different from those in his class, which will help me remember that he’s showing persistence.

My annotations are helping me notice the mindset he had throughout his story. If I didn’t annotate the reading, I would have just read the things I highlighted and ignored them, rather than reading it and understanding where his mentality is at.

Alexies and I have a something in common when it comes to teachers. Just like Alexies school, some teachers have the expectation that students are going to fail and express that by putting the students down. Even more like Alexies experience, however, I tried to push myself to show to teachers I’m not the student they think I am or going to be and some followed the path that their teachers told them they were going to go down.
